Infertility is a big part of my life. It's one that's been easier to push to the back of my mind with the arrival of baby Z, but that is still a constant nonetheless. I used to resent our infertility, and sometimes even God for thinking I could handle such a 'hard challenge'. But while I don't necessarily love infertility now and there are still times I sit in the bathroom and cry for a few minutes (usually around THAT time of the month) I have embraced it. I'm grateful for it. Why would I be grateful for it? Because it brought me my son. I know that baby Z is supposed to be in our family, he's the sunshine in our life and such a miracle. Every day I thank Heavenly Father for bringing him into our lives, so how can I deny his means of doing that? I would take infertility any day if it meant having him, because he was worth the wait, he was worth the tears, sadness, everything!! Not only am I grateful for little Z, but I'm thankful to Heavenly Father for bringing 'T' into our lives! We love her! She's beautiful, courageous, and my life is better for knowing her! We LOVE open adoption, and since infertility was the way that the adoption option came into our lives, while I still long physically bear children, I am okay with our infertility.

I'm so thankful that God's plan was better than my own because I would have missed so much if things had gone 'my way'!

About Us:

We are so excited that you are taking the time to read our letter and hope it will help you get to know us a little better! We met at Utah State University and quickly started dating. We became best friends, fell in love, and got married in May 2007. We still feel like it was the best decision we ever made! We both graduated from USU-Julie in 2008 with a B.S. in American Studies, and Lance in 2009 with a B.S. in Food Science. After graduation Lance was offered a job for a major food company and now he is working in quality assurance (to make sure the food is safe and more importantly—tastes good!) Julie is a stay-at-home-mom to our sweet little boy, Zachary, who joined our family in March 2010 through the miracle of adoption. He is our dream-come-true and we are so thankful everyday for his sweet birthmother, Trudy. We love Zachary so much and we’re excited to add more little people to our family and for him to be a big brother!

We love spending time together as a family. We take lots of walks and spend time finding new parks to play at! We are a very active family and love to be busy! We love sports of all kinds. We spend a lot of time in the summer at Julie’s races—Julie running, with Lance and Zachary cheering at the end! There’s nothing better than having your favorite fans cheer you on and we try to support each other in all of our interests! Whatever the weather we spend LOTS of time outside. When it’s warm we swim, hike, walk, camp, take road trips, and play sports. When it’s cold we bundle up and build snowmen. We love to go for drives and explore new places. We also love to just drive around and find homes that resemble our “dream home”. To relax we like to snuggle up on the couch with stories or movies and big bowls of popcorn!

Family is really important to us and we spend lots of time visiting and talking to our extended families. We love music. We are so excited to have Zachary to sing silly kid songs with and to sing lullabies to every night. One of his favorite things to do is wave his arms and “conduct” songs. We love to cook! Lance likes to cook yummy dinners, Julie likes to bake desserts and Zachary likes to help so it works out perfectly! No matter what we’re doing we can always find a way to make it fun.

All about Lance:

I am very personable. I am active and personal fitness is important to me. I love to play and watch sports. My favorite professional teams are NFL-Green Bay Packers, MLB-Chicago Cubs, and NHL-Boston Bruins. I also love soccer but do not have a favorite team. I like to play basketball, golf, and soccer. I also like to play ultimate Frisbee. I love to spend time with my family. Zachary and I like to play with his toy cars. I also love to spend time outdoors with him. Sometimes we will just walk in the front yard and I will let him show me everything he sees (rocks, insects, airplanes). I am fascinated by his little mind. I love it when my wife and son laugh and smile. I make it a goal each day to make sure that I give them a reason to smile. I love food and I have been lucky to have been able to start a career in it. I love to try new recipes in the kitchen. One of my favorites is chicken cordon bleu. My favorite part is pounding the chicken flat and using toothpicks to suture the ham and cheese inside of the rolled up chicken.

I have a firm testimony of my Savior Jesus Christ. I am continually trying to model my life after his example. It is very important to me to share my testimony with my family and others.

(Julie says) I feel lucky everyday that I get to be married to Lance. From the first time we met I recognized a genuineness about him that is very endearing. Lance is the most kind and selfless person you will ever meet. He is the cutest daddy in the world, and it melts my heart to watch him and Zachary together. Lance is very formal and polite and gives everyone so much respect. On the other hand, he also has his silly and crazy moments and never fails to make me and Zachary laugh. Lance loves sports of all kinds. He loves watching sports live or on TV and he loves fantasy sports. He loves having a little boy to teach sports to, and it cracks me up to watch them practice “toss”, “golf”, “dribble” and various other athletic skills. Lance is adorable with children. He is very relaxed and happy and young people are drawn to him. Zachary loves his dad. All day long he says “daddy, dad, dada” and every morning he gets so excited when it’s time to wake daddy up to play! These two have a bond that is so sweet and special. Lance is a great teacher, and our 7-year-old primary class loves him. Our neighbors are always asking if Lance can come out and play!

Lance is extremely hardworking and diligent. He takes pride in being able to provide for our family. I love everything about Lance, but I especially love his dedication to God and to our family. Lance has a strong testimony and always strives to reach out in service to others and be an example and friend in everything he does. Zachary and I are so blessed to have him in our lives!

All about Julie:

I am a fun-loving, goal-oriented person. I love to read, write, and frequently type posts on our blog. It’s great because it keeps the family up-to-date and helps me remember all of our fun milestones. I love to run. A few years ago I ran a marathon, and I have run several half-marathons. I’m not extremely competitive, but my goal is always get a little better than before. I love anything crafty: decorating, painting, sewing...our house is usually cluttered with one project or another. I love to learn new things and hope someday to earn my master's degree. Zachary and I have fun babysitting our cute neighbors once a week, and being a mom is the best job I’ve ever had! I love Zachary so much and have so much fun teaching him and watching him learn new things. He brings so much joy into my life and I can’t even remember what it was like without him. I love the gospel and have a testimony that Jesus Christ is my Savior. My biggest goal is to make Lance and Zachary happy and to try and serve people every day.

(Lance says) Julie is my best friend. She is a loving and caring person. She is always looking for ways she can help others, especially our neighbors. She is very good at seeking others’ needs and addressing them. She invites the neighborhood children over to play with Zachary and she likes to share treats with everyone when they come to play. Julie is a diligent mother. She sets routines with Zachary for play time, story time, nap time, and bed time, etc. and does her best to stick to them. Since I work a swing shift, I am rarely home in the evenings, but when I am, I see how our son behaves and know that it is 100% because of his mother’s diligence. Julie loves to try new things. This year she decided she needed to experiment with gardening. Since we live in an apartment we chose to grow some garden vegetables in pots. She and Zachary walk out and water them every day. They have taken good care of them and we are seeing success!

Julie loves to be fit. I admire her love of running. Julie is very self-motivated to run her half marathons and though I do not enjoy running as she does I love to support her in her personal goals. She has also begun to attend yoga classes and she is getting very good. Another attribute that I love about Julie is that she is accommodating of my hobbies. Although she doesn’t necessarily view them the way I do, she is very patient with me and lets me just do my thing sometimes. Zachary and I are very fortunate to have such a wonderful mommy and wife.

We love adoption so much. Not only do we love our sweet Zachary, but we are so lucky to have such a great friendship with his birthmother. We are so excited to add to our family and to build more relationships with birth families through letters, pictures, phone calls, and visits. Our goal is to find a relationship that is comfortable for everyone involved. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us! One of our favorite things to do is play games. A few of our favorites are Scrabble, Rook, Killer Bunnies, Ultimate Frisbee, Mini-Golf, Bowling...we could probably go on forever! We are both pretty competitive so we trash talk and make fun of each other most of the time. We frequently make bets to add a little spice!

We love the outdoors and spend a lot of our time hiking, camping, taking walks or even just going on drives in the canyon or picnicing at a park. Zac agrees with us and would rather be outside than anywhere else!

We go to lots of sporting events
Julie loves crafts and big projects. Usually there are several going on at a time!
Lance loves to golf and Julie loves to watch him. Sometimes we practice at the driving range:

Come get a glimpse of our little home!

Through the front door is the living room. It's also where all of Z's toys live and the floor is usually covered in them! We love to hang out here and snuggle up with a good movie after a long day.
Our bedroom is right off of the living room--this is an old picture...it's much more crowded now with all of the things Z gets into trouble with that we have to hide!

Z's bedroom is next door to ours. It's our favorite room! If Z's next sibling is a brother, we'll get another bed and they'll share this room!
Across from the nursery are the laundry room and bathroom.

The office/craft room opens off of the kitchen. It's usually cluttered with several projects! If our next child is a girl, we'll empty this room out to be hers! :)
The kitchen is where we gravitate to. Because we mainly use the back door we tend to hang out in the kitchen most often (plus it's where the food lives, and we love food :)
We have a fun playground and lots of space to run around out back!
We live in the cutest neighborhood and have awesome neighbors. We're located a few miles away from Lance's work (which is really nice!) We also live within a few blocks of an elementary school, public library, fun parks, and our very favorite toy store! In the next few years we'll be moving into a house (space is getting tight!) but for now we love our little home.

In March 2008 we received the heartbreaking verdict that we would most likely never have biological children. Although we weren't trying to conceive at the time, we were hoping to start adding to our family soon and we were crushed! The doctor we spoke with gave us a few options, but we knew right away that adoption was the one for us. Since we had only been married for about a year (and you can't start your paperwork with LDS Family Services (LDSFS) until you're married for two) we threw ourselves into work and school and focused on building our relationship as a couple.

In May 2009 the long-awaited deadline passed and we were so excited to get started! We'd just moved from Logan to Springville (after Lance graduated) to start a new job and we were eager to add the adoption process to all of the new things we were experiencing. After our anniversary we called LDSFS to get more information on how to start the process. We were sad to learn that we had missed the orientation meeting (it was the night before we called) and would have to wait until August to get started! At first we were really disappointed, but we used the time to get settled into a new home and jobs.

On August 5th 2009 we attended the orientation meeting and we started our paperwork right away...we were ready! After being assigned a caseworker we sped through our paperwork as fast as we could, we both felt a sense of urgency that we couldn't explain. Just a few months after starting our paperwork we were approved. We spread the word and had a big celebration, then braced ourselves for the potentially long wait ahead.

It turned out to be a good thing that we rushed because November 28, 2009-- less than a month after our approval--we met Zachary's birth mom. It was a day of extremely mixed emotions because it was also the day of my nephews funeral. However, once we met Trudy we felt a very special bond with her, and we knew that this was the "real deal". It turned out we were right! A few days after meeting we had another visit and Trudy told us she had chosen us to be the parents of her baby boy that was due in April! It was the most exciting, surreal moment of our lives. That entire night I was too excited too sleep (which was actually a common problem the next few months!)

Zachary was born March 2010 and has blessed our lives more than we ever imagined! There is no doubt in our minds that he is supposed to be in our family, and we are thankful every day for the miracle of adoption. We have an open adoption with Zachary's birth mom and love her so much. We admire her courage and strength and are so thankful for our relationship with her, and for her relationship with Zachary. He will never wonder if he was loved because he will always know what a tremendous sacrifice she made and will feel of her love through our visits! We still love to get together with Trudy and hang out, she's kind of like a sister to us. We feel like we're extra lucky because we didn't just have a baby, we gained a whole bunch of extra people to love! (Plus there are more people who love Zachary--he's a lucky boy!)

I grew up in Illinois and am the oldest of six children (3 boys 3 girls). We are a really close family and love to spend time together. Although we don't live nearby or see each other very often we do call home every week and visit as often as we can. My family is very supportive and we always cheer each other on in our achievements. We love to eat together and discuss how things are going. We have a lot of excellent cooks in our family so we enjoy good food! Our extended family is tight knit and we love to get together for regular family reunions. We have a blast hanging out with cousins! We are a big, happy family and can't wait to grow even more. Z is the first grandchild, but we're excited to gain another cousin in April!

I am the third oldest of nine kids (5 boys 4 girls). We're really lucky to live close to most of them and have a blast getting together. Usually our time involves being outside, eating good food, and laughing a LOT! On my side there are 5 nieces and one angel nephew--Zac loves playing with them. My sisters are my best friends and whenever we're together there are guaranteed belly laughs! (Like our 'Martha Washington' hair seen below)

Lance is the sweetest man I have ever met. He is extremely selfless and always strives to make me happy. Lance is very formal and polite and gives everyone so much respect. On the other hand, he also has his silly and crazy moments and never fails to make me laugh. Whenever I'm feeling upset all I need is one smile from him and I can't help but smile back. Lance loves sports of all kinds. Not being an extremely sporty person myself he has shown so much patience in teaching me. Whether it's the rules of football or how to serve a volleyball, he never hesitates to give me the utmost attention and doesn't get exasperated when he has to explain things over and over! Lance is also adorable with children. He is very relaxed and happy and young people are drawn to him. I especially love to hear him teach our 7-year-old primary class and watch him interact and play with our nieces. He is going to be the most amazing father, and I am so excited for that day!

How it All Began:

We met while going to school at Utah State University. Lance had just returned from his mission to Spain in the spring and I was just starting my second year of college.Shortly after me and my roommates met Lance he invited ALL of us over for dinner. (My roommates were really flirty and got him to extend an invitation :) He had some pretty good odds that night! He cooked us a delicious Spanish meal. I knew after that date that I was crushing on Lance a little bit and hurriedly staked my claim with the roommates :) A few weeks later there was a girl's choice dance on campus and I needed a date! It took all my courage, and some prodding from my roommate Jamie to help me make the call, but finally I did and he said "yes" (of course!) We had a blast, and afterward Lance asked me out on several dates and we became an "item". We became best friends, dating off and on, and a year and a half later we tied the knot!

We were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on May 25, 2007.

Our Colors were bright green, turquoise, and country blue. Julie's mom made our wedding cake!

Julie is a wonderful person. She lightens my spirit when we are together. She is very thoughtful and caring. She is a faithful friend to others and is my best friend. Julie has cute brown hair that curls naturally and a "killer" smile. Julie is a good sport and always willing to try new things! Because of her fun/crazy personality we always have a blast palying board and card games. we always trash talk each other and laugh like crazy! Julie is competitive and likes to win, but sometimes when she feels bad she'll let me win :) Julie is an excellent cook and is very crafty and creative. One of my favorite projects she's done is an amazing Aggie quilt that she gave me for graduation. Julie is smart and values knowledge. She is also health conscious and fit. She loves to run and I am her number one fan at the finish line of each race! Julie is very good with children and is going to be a great mother. I love to watch her play with her nieces and teach them new things. I am so excited to spend eternity with Julie, she is the love of my life and it would not be the same without her!
